We are proud to announce the publication of Resisting the Tide: Cultures of Opposition under Berlusconi (2001-06).
Edited by Daniele Albertazzi, Clodagh Brook, Charlotte Ross, and Nina Rothenberg, the book focuses on Berlusconi's term as Prime Minister from 2001-06.
"This volume provides a very valuable catalogue of the opposition to Berlusconi which has formed over the last 15 years in Italian politics, society, and the cultural and entertainment industries. Its examination is as accurate and exhaustive as it is fragmentary; exactly like the opposition itself. It is a useful contribution for helping us understand not just that there isn't only Berlusconi in Italy, but also why his political success continues to grow." --Ilvo Diamanti, Professor of Political Science at the University of Urbino "Carlo Bo
"The high and long-lasting tide of berlusconismo seems almost irresistible. Perhaps this is because Berlusconi really does represent large sectors of Italian society. As many of the contributors to this indispensable book document and argue, cultures of opposition in Italy are fragmented and prove unable to coalesce into serious political and parliamentary opposition. This excellent collection of essays focuses on all types of cultural, intellectual, and media resistance to the popular-populist tide." --Gianfranco Pasquino, Professor of Political Science at the University of Bologna and at the Johns Hopkins Bologna Center

The first five of twenty volumes that make up Continuum's Major Conservative and Libertarian Thinkers series are published. They are:
1. Thomas Hobbes by R.E.R. Bunce
2. John Locke by Erick Mack
3. David Hume by Christopher Berry
4. Joseph A. Schumpeter by John Medearis
5. The Modern Papacy by Samuel Gregg
For more information, visit our website at: http://www.continuumbooks.com
"The volumes in this timely series comprise the most comprehensive body of material on conservative and libertarian thought yet published in a single project devoted to the subject. The series will prove an indispensable tool not only for those concerned with the history of political thought but also for those who confront the challenging task of constructing a viable contemporary conservative identity. Professor Meadowcroft had a difficult editorial task, to which he has responded with a judicious choice of thinkers and topics." -- Noel O'Sullivan, Professor of Political Philosophy, the University of Hull, UK.
And coming this October:
6. Edmund Burke by Dennis O'Keeffe
7. Alexis de Tocqueville by Alan S. Kahan
8. Michael Oakeshott by Edmund Neill
9. The Salamanca School by Andre Alves and Jose Manuel Moreira
10. Ayn Rand by Mimi Gladstein
Congratulations to Bruno Sergi on the publication of his latest book, Misinterpreting Modern Russia: Western Views of Putin and his Presidency.
Bruno Sergi argues, in this new study, that the way to know the complete story behind how Putin’s presidency has been viewed in Russia, is to examine closely the hard realities that conditioned Putin’s policies and responses. Misinterpreting Modern Russia: Western Views of Putin and his Presidency looks beyond the stereotypes to the hard logic of the 1990s, and asks a range of provocative questions about the disintegration of the old Soviet empire and the extraordinary riches that have caused so much opportunity and turmoil in recent years.

Today is election day in Iran and the results are anxiously expected.
Continuum published this year Iran and Christianity: Historical Identity and Present Relevance by Mark Bradley.
In this enlightening study Mark Bradley looks at the growing underground church in Iran. Given the hostility of the regime, it is often assumed that Christianity is withering in Iran, but in fact more Iranian Muslims have become Christians in the last 25 years than since the seventh century, when Islam first came to Iran.
"Mark Bradley clearly knows Iran and the Iranian people. Dealing honestly with the historical and political identity of Iran as well as the growth and suffering of the Iranian church, the book reads like a novel, I did not want to put it down. With so much mutual misunderstanding and mistrust between the United States and Iran, this is an important and timely book. It deserves a wide readership. I hope it dispels ignorance and helps diffuse tensions between Iran and the West. It should become a standard popular text on the development of Christianity in Iran." - Revd. Dr Stephen Sizer, author and senior pastor, Christ Church, Virginia Water, UK
Tomorrow, Iranians will vote to elect their president. This year also happens to be the 30th anniversary of the 1979 Iranian Revolution.
The BBC has a full web page about the elections, which can be accessed at http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/in_depth/middle_east/2009/iran/default.stm
Also, the Council on Foreign Relations offers background information on presidential power in Iran, to be found at http://www.cfr.org/publication/19593/
All our titles appear on Amazon.
We strongly recommend that authors encourage colleagues to post reviews --especially favorable ones!-- of their books on Amazon. Customer Reviews are helpful to potential readers, especially when they give a good idea of the contents and scope of the book.
You can also make changes to an Amazon record. This might sound surprising and even scary, but yes, anyone can suggest a change. If you scroll all the way down the bottom of the book record you're looking at, you will see a box titled "Feedback." Click on the option "update product info" and follow the steps. Amazon will send you an email to see whether they can accept the change. So, they don't just input anything and everything --one can imagine the authors and publishers' ensuing nightmares!
If you have any tips, please feel free to share!
