Continuum is attending the Frankfurt Book Fair from October 14 to October 18. The Fair is a great meeting place for publishing professionals, including publishers, agents, booksellers, and authors. Publishers showcase their titles and look for foreign rights deal.

Peer Reviews

At Continuum, we take scholarship seriously. To ensure that we publish works of quality while meeting our author's needs, we send all our project proposals for review to scholars. Reviewers are chosen because of their expertise in the relevant field.

If you are publishing a monograph and wish to have the entire manuscript reviewed, we can arrange that, too --although make sure to discuss it with your editor so as to build the reviewing time into the schedule!

Widgets!

Continuum is continually expanding its marketing efforts, making the most of new technology. We are now pleased to announce that are developing widgets for most of our books.

What is a widget and what does it do? Basically, it acts as a weblink. Included in an email or website, one click on the link brings up all the information on a new title, including table of contents and sample chapters. For textbooks, its allows the entire text to be accessible for 90 days.

What does it mean for your book? It means greater visibility as well as increased advertising opportunities. Scholars in your field will not have to request a review copy. Instead they will get an email from us which will give them free access to the contents electronically for 90 days. You can also add it to your blog, website, or email to garner interest. With widgets, we can reach many more people in no time at all.

New Website!

Continuum has launched its new website! Be sure to visit at http://www.continuumbooks.com/

The website offers a more integrated service and showcases our titles across the disciplines. You wil find all the information an author needs, from guidelines on how to write a proposal to permission forms along with all our content offerings, from new releases and catalogs to inspection copies and special offers.

This new site is part of Continuum's ongoing electronic development that includes e-book publishing and building companion websites for our textbooks.

If you attend BookExpo America this weekend in New York, please be sure to come by the Continuum booth (Booth # 4115).

What we're working on

So what's happening at Continuum? Well, quite a lot and we are happy to report that we are holding up against the waves of the financial crisis. (Incidentally, our offices are right next to the stock exchange and we had front row seats to the autumn of our discontent!) More to the point, here are some highlights:

• We have launched a massive program of e-book publishing. For one thing, all our monographs are now available in print and electronically.
• The politics list is growing steadily and come 2009, many new titles will begin publishing in the areas of international relations, political economy, comparative politics, political theory, and American politics.
• Many of our books now come with a companion website, and we strongly encourage authors to set up a site --we'll be happy to help. For an example, visit Watching What we Eat.
• We have some very popular authors' s blogs, such as the one for No Time to Think.
  
• Starting this year, as you may have noted, we will have a booth at both American Political Science Association (APSA) and International Studies Association (ISA) meetings. Be sure to come visit us!

Peer-Reviews

At Continuum, peer-review is an integral part of the acquisition process.  Reviews help the publisher position the book and seed early coursebook adoptions. Most importantly, they help the author refine and strengthen the project.

Proposal are always sent for review with the author's permission.  Once the reviews are in, you will be asked to write a brief response and address the comments as needed. Sometimes, that means clarifying the scope of a chapter, or explaining why a topic is not covered. In the end, reviews strengthen a project and we can guarantee our readers a work of high-quality.

Hello!

The end of the year is the usual time to take stock of where we're at and look at what's ahead.

First, I want to thank all the scholars and authors who shared their research with me and are working on projects. For all your help, time, and kindness: a heartfelt thanks!

Second, our catalog is growing quickly and starting in 2009, you will start seeing the results of our dedication to developing a scholarly politics list. As a reminder, I am acquiring books for the academic market in the fields of International Relations, Comparative Politics, Political Theory, Public Policy, American Politics and Government. Feel free to share ideas!

More about the Politics List

Continuum is dedicated to developing its politics list by commissioning academic works of varied formats, such as monographs, supplementals, and textbooks. Our main markets are the US/UK/Canada students and faculty, but we sell in all English-speaking countries.

We have an extensive backlist of over 800 politics titles, published mostly out of our UK office. Continuum is growing, especially its New York office and, with a dedicated editor and sales team, is developing the list with strong editorial vision and marketing savvy.

To lay a solid foundation to the list, we are concentrating on publishing mostly on international relations, comparative politics, American politics & government, political theory, and public policy. This will be followed by works covering public law, political methodology, public administration, and more specialized areas such as life science and politics or urban politics.

Politics is a vast, dynamic field, and we are excited about developing our list. We want to reflect the state of the scholarship and to showcase classic research and  new contributions to the field, to have a vibrant, successful list that represents the richness of the field.
